What Type of Learning Style Does Your Child Have?

As a homeschool parent this question is important. To understand your learner’s learning style, will help you be better prepared on how to teach them. I hope you read my introduction in the About Us section. If you didn’t, go there now. My first year teaching Elijah was difficult and I consider myself a professional educator. I have a Master in Education and my professional background is teaching and instructional design. While in my career, the first thing I did as an educator was see what type of learning styles my learners had. Well, I forgot all about that important piece, my first year with Elijah because I was stuck in “mommy hat” mode. I had to take a step back and begin to think like an educator again. I needed to know what Elijah’s learning style or styles were, and I needed to put on my “teacher’s hat”. “It’s not about me, it’s about my learner and creating an environment where he can learn,” is what I would say to myself.

Types of Learning Styles

Auditory

I learn by hearing.

Read/Write

I learn by reading and writing it down in my own words.

Kinesthetic

I learn by doing.

V.A.R.K. Questionnaire For Elementary Learners

Don’t be surprised if your learner is scored high in more than one type. Take the highest two scores and that is how you focus their learning. If, they are equal across the board, no problem. You know better what your child likes to do more than anyone; look at pictures or draw pictures, listen to stories, read books, and write, or take things apart and put them back together or good at puzzles. Base their learning off what they like to do the most. This is how you learn how to be the best you can be for them.
